TREE FELLING VS SECTIONAL DISMANTLING
What's the Difference?

The method used to remove a tree depends largely on its location and the space available around it.

Straight felling involves cutting the tree at the base and allowing it to fall in a controlled direction. This is the most efficient method but requires sufficient clear space around the tree for it to fall safely. It is commonly used in open gardens, woodland and agricultural land.

Sectional dismantling is used where straight felling is not possible - for example where a tree is close to a building, fence, vehicle or other obstacle. The tree is removed in sections from the top down, with each section carefully rigged and lowered to the ground using ropes and specialist climbing equipment. This method requires greater skill and time but allows trees to be removed safely in even the most confined spaces.

Our team will assess your tree and advise on the most appropriate method when we visit for your free quote.

REASONS TO REMOVE A TREE
Common Reasons for Tree Removal

There are many reasons a tree may need to be removed. The most common include:

  • Dead or dying trees - a dead tree becomes increasingly unstable over time and can pose a serious risk to people and property

  • Disease - trees affected by disease such as ash dieback, honey fungus or Phytophthora can deteriorate rapidly and may need to be removed to prevent spread to neighbouring trees

  • Structural damage - roots causing damage to drains, foundations, walls or paving

  • Storm damage - trees that have been partially uprooted or have suffered significant limb failure following severe weather

  • Overcrowding - trees that have grown too large for their position and are affecting light, neighbouring properties or other plants

  • Development or landscaping - clearing a site for a new build, extension, driveway or garden redesign

Tree Preservation Orders & Planning Permission
TPO

Before removing any tree it is important to check whether it is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a conservation area. Carrying out work on a protected tree without prior consent from the local authority is a criminal offence and can result in significant fines.

We handle the TPO application and notification process on your behalf as part of our service. If you are unsure whether your tree is protected, we can advise when we visit. Wiltshire Council and Bath & North East Somerset Council both operate online TPO mapping tools which can give an initial indication.

What Happens to the Timber and Brash?

Once a tree has been felled we can either remove all timber and brash from site, leaving the area completely clear, or leave timber on site if you would like to use it for firewood. Smaller brash is chipped on site where possible. Just let us know your preference when booking.

If you would also like the stump removed, we offer stump grinding as an additional service - this can usually be carried out on the same visit.

FAQ’S
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need permission to fell a tree in my garden?
Not always, but it depends on whether the tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a conservation area. We can check this for you and handle any necessary applications as part of our service.

How long does tree felling take?
A straightforward garden tree can often be felled and cleared in half a day. Larger trees or those requiring sectional dismantling will take longer. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we provide your quote.

Can you remove the stump at the same time?
Yes - we offer stump grinding as an add-on to tree felling work and can usually carry this out on the same visit. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What do you do with the wood chip?
Wood chip produced during the felling and chipping process can be left on site for use as mulch or removed entirely - your choice.

Is tree felling dangerous?
Tree felling carries inherent risks, which is why it should always be carried out by qualified professionals. Our team are fully trained, experienced and insured to carry out tree felling work safely in all situations.
