WHY REMOVE A STUMP?
Why Should You Remove a Tree Stump?

There are several good reasons to have a stump professionally removed after a tree has been felled:

• Regrowth - many tree species will continue to produce shoots from the root system if the stump is left in place, meaning the problem keeps coming back

• Trip hazard - stumps can be difficult to see, particularly when grass grows around them, making them a risk to children, elderly visitors and anyone unfamiliar with the garden

• Pests and disease - decaying stumps can attract wood-boring insects and fungal diseases such as honey fungus, which can spread to healthy trees and plants nearby

• Appearance - a stump can make an otherwise well-kept garden look untidy and can affect property value

• Space - removing the stump opens up the area for replanting, turfing, paving or any other landscaping work

HOW IT WORKS
How Does Stump Grinding Work?

Stump grinding uses a specialist machine fitted with a rotating cutting disc to chip away at the stump, grinding it down progressively below ground level. The process is efficient, relatively quiet and causes far less disturbance to the surrounding area than digging a stump out whole.

We grind well below ground level, which is enough for the area to be re-turfed or landscaped afterwards. If you are planning to plant a new tree in exactly the same spot, let us know when we quote, as that needs the stump taking out deeper.

As standard we backfill the hole with the arisings and level it off, so you are not left with a pit in the lawn. The material produced is a mix of wood and soil rather than clean woodchip, so we would not recommend spreading it on beds or borders as a mulch. It settles well in the hole, but if you want to turf or plant over the area straight away, it is worth bringing in a little topsoil to finish. We are happy to advise on that, or to take the arisings away if you would prefer.

Most domestic stumps can be ground out in under an hour. Larger stumps, or those in awkward locations, may take longer, but we will always advise on timing and access when providing your quote.

What About Surface Roots?

On mature trees, it is often the roots rather than the stump that cause the real problem. Large surface roots can lift lawns, crack paving and block off areas you want to replant or build on, and they can carry on being a nuisance long after the stump itself is gone.

Where access allows, we grind out surface roots as well as the stump, following them back and taking them down below ground level so the ground can be levelled properly afterwards. It is worth pointing them out when we come to quote, as they can affect how long the job takes.

There are limits worth knowing about. Roots running underneath a wall, a driveway or close to buried services cannot always be ground safely, and we would rather tell you that at the quote stage than discover it halfway through the job.
