Hedge Species We Work With
We work with all common hedge species found across Wiltshire gardens and rural properties, including:
Box - formal, slow-growing and a classic choice for low borders and topiary
Privet - one of the most common garden hedges, fast-growing and requiring regular trimming to maintain a clean shape
Leylandii - fast-growing conifers that can quickly become unmanageable without regular attention
Beech and hornbeam - popular for formal boundaries, retaining their copper-coloured leaves through winter
Holly - dense, spiky and excellent for security as well as wildlife habitat
Laurel - large-leaved and vigorous, requiring careful cutting to avoid a ragged appearance
Yew - slow-growing and long-lived, responding well to precise cutting
Mixed native hedgerows - hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple and other native species commonly found on rural properties and field boundaries
Whatever species you have, we will advise on the best approach and timing for your hedge.
When is the Best Time to Cut a Hedge?
Timing depends on the species and the type of hedge:
Formal hedges such as box, yew and privet typically benefit from two cuts per year - once in late spring after the first flush of growth, and again in late summer to maintain a clean line going into autumn.
Informal hedges and flowering hedges are usually cut once a year, ideally after flowering to avoid removing next year's flower buds.
Native hedgerows should not be cut between 1st March and 31st August to protect nesting birds - this is a legal requirement under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. We work within these guidelines on all hedgerow work.
Leylandii should be cut in late spring and again in early autumn, never cutting back into bare brown wood as this will not regenerate.
If you are unsure about the best timing for your hedge, we are happy to advise when we visit.

FAQ’S
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have my hedge cut?
This depends on the species. Fast-growing hedges such as privet and leylandii may need cutting two or three times a year, while slower-growing species like yew and box typically need cutting once or twice. We can advise on the right schedule for your hedge when we visit.
Can you cut large or overgrown hedges?
Yes - we regularly tackle overgrown hedges that have not been cut for several years. Depending on the species and extent of the overgrowth, we will advise on whether a single hard cut is appropriate or whether a phased approach over two or three seasons would give a better result.
Do you take the cuttings away?
Yes - we remove and dispose of all arisings from hedge cutting work, leaving your garden or site clean and tidy on completion.
Can you cut hedges near power lines or boundaries?
Yes, we have the equipment and experience to work safely near overhead cables, boundary walls, fences and other structures. We will assess any specific constraints when we visit.
Is there a minimum hedge size or length you will work on?
No - we work on hedges of all sizes, from small garden borders to long rural boundary hedgerows.
